Water, one of the five elements of nature, is perhaps the most mysterious of them all and the most revered in various cultures and faiths for its sacred values and life-sustaining properties. From the sacred ‘jal’ kept in our homes for worship or sprinkled on a baby during christening, from rituals and practices associated with water to public festivals where deities are immersed in tanks, rivers or in the ocean, water shapes the cultural landscape of Mumbai.
However, it is also important to question how limiting our idea of sacredness is. While on the one hand we revere water in some forms, we often fail to notice the magic of simple forms of water around us - the beauty and abundance of Mumbai’s monsoon, availability of potable water to many of us at the turn of a tap and its inherent ability to cleanse our bodies, cook our food and quench our thirst.
So whilst this section of the exhibition celebrates water and faith through the various interpretations that the diversity of the city’s populace follows, we also urge our audience to expand on the idea of the sacred and recognize that every form and every drop of water is sacred beyond measure.
पाणी, पंच महाभुतांमधील सर्वात अनाकलनीय, पण त्या सोबतच त्याच्या पवित्र्यामुळे व जीवसृष्टीला जोपासण्याच्या शक्तीमुळे निरनिराळ्या संस्कृतींमध्ये पूजनीय आहे. घराघरात पूजेसाठी देवघरात ठेवलेले पवित्र जल, ख्रिस्ती धर्मांत बारशाच्या वेळी वापरले जाणारे जल, विविध धार्मिक विधींसाठी जसे पाणी आवश्यक असते, तसेच तलाव, नद्या आणि समुद्रात केल्या जाणाऱ्या सार्वजनिक विसर्जनासाठी देखील आवश्यक असणाऱ्या पाण्याने मुंबईचा सांस्कृतिक नकाशा आकार घेतो.
असं असलं तरी या पाण्याच्या पवित्रतेकडे पाहण्याचा आपला दृष्टिकोन किती संकुचित आहे? एकीकडे आपण या पाण्याची निरनिराळ्या रूपांत पूजा करतो तर दुसरीकडे आपल्या भोवती सहज उपलब्ध असलेल्या पाण्याकडे दुर्लक्ष करतो. मुबलक पडणारा आणि सुंदर असणारा मुंबईचा मौसमी पाऊस, नळ उघडताच सहज मिळणारे पिण्याचे पाणी, शरीर आतून बाहेरून निरोगी बनविणारे पाणी, अन्न शिजवायला उपयुक्त असणारे व आपली तहान भागविणारे पाणी.
शहरातील विविध संस्कृतीचे लोकं, आपापल्या पद्धतीने पाणी आणि त्या त्या पंथातील पाण्याची विविध रूपे याचा आनंद आपण या प्रदर्शनातून घेणार आहोत. सोबतच आम्ही प्रेक्षकांना पाण्याप्रती आपला दृष्टिकोन अधिक समृद्ध करून त्याचे पावित्र्य जपण्याचे आवाहन करतो.
