Mumbai’s identity of a coastal city held together in the embrace of the Arabian Sea is a well known fact. The briny coastal air in the city is often associated with the smell of dried fish and the famous Mumbai rains have inspired many a romantic to pen a beautiful song.
However, few are aware of the wide biodiversity of marine life that thrives in the intertidal zone of its saline waters, few have access to secret recipes that transform these dried fish into delectable chutneys, curries and more. And often, lost in the music of monsoon few give thought to those whose homes get flooded by the torrential waters, forcing them to pack their meagre belongings and move out of their homes.
This exhibit is a window to these hidden secrets and some harsh realities of the mysterious saline waters that define Mumbai.
परिचय: मुंबईला चहुबाजूंनी वेढणाऱ्या अरबी समुद्रामुळे, मुंबईची समुद्र किनाऱ्या लगतचे शहर ही ओळख अबाधित राहिली आहे. शहराच्या दिशेने वाहणारे समुद्राचे खारे वारे सुक्या मासळीचा वास सोबत घेऊन येतात. मुंबईचा सुप्रसिद्ध पाऊस कवींना सुंदर प्रणयगीते लिहिण्याची प्रेरणा देतात.
काही मोजक्या लोकांनाच या खाऱ्या पाण्यातील जीवसृष्टीची खरी ओळख आहे, काहींना या सुक्या मासळीला वापरून बनणार्‍या चटकदार चटण्या, लोणची असे अनेक खाद्य पदार्थ पारंपरिक पद्धतीने बनविता येतात.
मुंबईच्या पावसाचे संगीत ऐकताना आपण मात्र, मुसळधार पावसात घरात पाणी शिरल्याने स्वतःच्या जमेल तेवढ्या सामानासोबत घर सोडावे लागणाऱ्या अनेकांना मात्र आपण विसरतो. या प्रदर्शनाद्वारे जीवसृष्टीचा खजिना आणि सोबत समुद्राच्या खाऱ्या पाण्याचे गूढ वास्तव याचे एक दालन आपल्यासमोर उभे करण्याचा आमचा हा प्रयत्न.
